Five Ideas for Office Games

office-games_fullContrary to popular belief, fun and work are not mutually exclusive. There is a growing body of research suggesting happier people work harder. A playful workplace helps draw new talent, relieve stress, increase motivation, and build relationships among coworkers.

To that end, we at Corporate Event Interactive suggest you kick back and let us do the leg work as you read our list of games ready-made to introduce a little fun into your office.

Let the games begin!

Binder Clip Tag
The objective of Binder Clip Tag is to pin a single binder clip on to a coworker or something they are wearing without the coworker in question noticing. If your victim notices what you are doing, you’ve failed and must try again later or choose another, less-observant person to try to clip it to. If the clipping is a success your hapless victim is left to find out they have been clipped the next time they brush a hand through their hair or dig for their pen in their pocket. When they discover they’ve been clipped the hunted becomes the hunter and the once-victim is tasked with passing the binder clip on to another coworker in the same sneaky fashion it passed to him/her.

Strategy tip: baggy clothing is a disadvantage as is not having eyes in the back of your head. If you want to raise the stakes of the game, set a wager on it. Whoever leaves with the binder clip on them at the end of the day buys the next round of drinks.

Word of warning: this game is difficult to stop playing. Head on a swivel!

Photo Assassins
This is an office-safe riff on the classic game Assassins. To begin, one person must assign each player a target from among the other players. All players should be linked in a chain, for example: Player A is hunting Player B, Player B is hunting Player C, and so forth. Then all players receive the name of their target and the game begins.

Each player’s task is to find and “assassinate” their target. The weapon of choice for all players is a smart phone or digital camera and the only viable assassination method is a picture of the target facing the camera. (Note: Photos from behind don’t count, but should you find yourself walking behind your unfortunate target, we suggest saying their name. That usually does the trick.)

When an assassination successfully takes place, the assassin announces to the target that he/she has been assassinated (and shows them the picture for quality control). The newly assassinated player then relinquishes to their attacker the identity of the target they’d been hunting. For example, if Player A takes a photo of Player B, Player B gives Player A the slip of paper with Player C’s name on it. Then the game continues until there is only one player left.

Secret Mission of the Day
Nothing builds camaraderie in the workplace like a little playful deception. Enter Secret Mission of the Day. As the name would indicate, Secret Mission of the Day is about assigning secret missions to your coworkers that they must accomplish over the course of the day. This game can be played several ways: (1) Each player assigns a secret mission to another player, or (2) one mastermind assigns missions to everyone playing the game. Both are lots of fun!
Here are a few example missions to get you off on the right foot:

1. One person receives a note that says: “Choose five outrageous lies about yourself and tell them to as many people as possible today.” (For example: “Bon Jovi is my grandfather”, “I invented Scrabble”, or “I was once on a scrubbed moon launch”. The other players receive notes that say: “Someone is going to tell five outrageous lies about themselves today. You win if you can name him/her by the end of the day.”
2. One person, let’s call him Bob, receives a note that says: “You have no mission today. Get some work done!” The other players all receive notes that says: “Steal something from Bob’s desk today!” and are told they are the only ones to receive that specific mission. Bob wins if he gets wise to what is going on or catches anyone red-handed.
3. This mission involves players and non-players in a meeting setting. The players are each assigned a word that is somewhat awkward to fit into a sentence, for instance: “Sasquatch”, “Formaldehyde”, or “Fungus”. The task of each player is to fit that word into a sentence five times during a meeting in which both players and non-players are present. The winner is the player who can use the word in a sentence five times without any of the non-players noticing or remarking in any way that they are saying the word more than usual.

Ninja Game
Let’s be honest, at one point or another we’ve all wanted to be able to disappear in Ninja fashion in the blink of an eye or the turn of a head. Well, here is your chance to practice. The objective of in the Ninja Game is to vanish at unexpected moments; the more unexpected the moment and thorough the vanishing act, the better. For example, imagine you and a coworker are walking down a hall past a bank of elevators. Your coworker is droning on about the TPS report he has to file, while you slip silently into the elevator as the door slides shut. If your coworker does a double take, you win. Extra points for crowds.

Post-It Bomb
Disclaimer: This game involves imaginary explosions. We recommend consulting your legal department and/or office fun-killer before playing.
To play Post-It Bomb all you need is a pen, a stack of Post-Its, and a taste for paranoia and theatricality. To play, participants simply write the word “Bomb” on a Post-It and place it where their coworkers will stumble upon it. Viable locations for Post-It bombs include: in a stack of papers, on the back of a chair, in a closed laptop, on the back of a bathroom stall door, etc. Bombs should be labeled by their location, for example: “Text Message Bomb”, “Toilet Seat Bomb”, “Trash Can Bomb”, etc.

When any player sees a Post-It bomb, they must explode. No, not literally, but it should still cause a scene. We’re talking noise, papers flying, his/her body flopping onto the floor. Any coworker who witnesses the “explosion” and deems it inadequately dramatic has the right to call for a repeat performance until all witnesses are satisfied the theatrically-challenged victim in question has truly and properly exploded.

However, if a player anticipates the location of a Post-It bomb in, say, a briefcase, he/she may loudly declare “I hereby disarm the briefcase bomb!” Bombs disarmed in this manner may be safely handled and destroyed without threat of explosion/embarrassment.

Good luck! Let us know how the games go on our Facebook or Twitter page!

In early-March, a new attraction opened up at Vaughan Mills Outlet Mall (otherwise known as “the city above Toronto”), Legoland® Discovery Center. I’ve always been a fan of LEGO® and now my son is too. So I signed up for their e-newsletter and Facebook page to be kept up-to-date on the latest events, coupons and deals offered. I noticed in one of their recent emails, that they’ve begun offering Adult Nights (No Kids Allowed!) in both the Vaughan and Chicago locations. What a great idea, especially as a teambuilding experience! This would be a unique way for everyone to not only use their creative and motor skills but also a fun night out exploring all the cool ways to build Lego creations. There’s also a Café that serves pizza, sandwiches and other meal choices when your hands need to take a break from all that creating!

The next “No Kids Allowed Night” in Chicago is being held Tuesday July 23rd, 7-9pm. Tickets are just $15.00 per person and it is open to guests aged 16 years old and over. Activities include: an advanced Model Builder Workshop, Speed build and creative challenges, and, Kingdom Quest Laser Ride High Score Challenges. Participants also have the opportunity to compete for LEGO-themed prizes and may bring in their very own LEGO displays that same night.

This is a great way to ‘bring out the kid in you’ – while the kids are at home being looked after for a night! Start that LEGO® (team)building!

LEGOLAND® Discovery Center Chicago is located in Schaumburg, Illinois. For more details and to order your tickets online, please Click Here.

A Splash of Fun – Teambuilding Ideas

Summer is finally upon us! It’s time to cherish these warm months ahead of us and make the best of our time outdoors. There’s so many outdoor teambuilding scavenger hunts, “play day” concepts and activities and even team sports that can bring your team together. For your next company teambuilding experience, why not try organizing “Beach Olympics”! This would be a great opportunity to utilize your local conservation authority area where all team members could play beach volleyball, sandcastle building, frisbee toss relays and even canoe and/or kayak racing. In the spirit of the FIFA Confederations Cup (being held June 15th – 30th in Brazil, which is a prelude to next summer’s FIFA World Cup), teams could divide up to play in a soccer tournament representing different countries of their choice. A little bit of play in the sun never hurt anyone – just don’t forget to wear your sunscreen and hats!

I remember reading a few years back one of the international hotel chains offering a teambuilding concept of “Build Your Own Martini Signature”. How refreshing for the summer! For those companies that are trying to encourage their employees to improve their overall health and wellness, a “Build Your Own Smoothie” would be a great alternative. This could work for an early-day or lunch challenge for teams to come up with inventive yet healthy smoothie recipes that reflect the overall company. Whether it’s in the ingredients or in the smoothie name itself, it allows team members to work together to blend a tasty product in a visually-appealing presentation, ultimately judged by a panel of thirsty managers and executives. Creative and healthy skills explored all in one!

The Adventures of Outdoor Teambuilding

Treetop Eco-Adventure Park

With the warm weather finally upon us (we’ve been patiently waiting for you!), we have to take full advantage of it and bring our teams outdoors for some interactive meetings. In this month’s blog post, I have highlighted a few locations that offer outdoor teambuilding activities that will get your teams pumped (literally and figuratively speaking!). They are based in and around the Greater Toronto Area regions, but I’m sure these interactive activities can be adapted to your next meeting, regardless the location.

Let’s start, shall we…..

Treetop Eco-Adventure Park – on the beautiful Oak Ridges Moraine in Oshawa, Ontario

This is the only aerial tree top adventure park offered in the Greater Toronto Area. The aerial adventure course, a much more evolved and fun version of a military training obstacle course, is securely suspended between the trees at 10 to 50 feet off the ground. Some of the features of the courses include giant Tyrolean Zip lines, suspended bridges, swinging surprises, Tarzan swings, nets and more. There are also hiking trails that groups can explore together. They even host birthday parties for adults and children; what a unique way to celebrate a milestone! All the park’s activities operate rain or shine, except for in severe weather conditions.

SkyLife Interactive Meetings

Located in Toronto, Barrie and cottage country’s Muskoka, Skyline Hotels & Resorts offers over 40 different sessions and workshops for companies looking to re-energize their teams, providing a balance between business and pleasure during their stay. One adventure offered is Paintball. This creates for a vigorous mental challenge and strategic thinking; preparing each team member for their role in battle. Or scale gravity defying slopes in their Hummer H1 tours. All tours are led by a professional driver. Skyline also offers treetop trekking adventures as well as zipline, mountain biking and Ogo (aqua or harness). Another program, Chef’s Night Out, lets team members to cook up either a food or drink, going behind the scenes to the hotel kitchen’s staff to gain “inside information”. Each one of their programs can be tailored towards your team.

Fishing Expedition

On Facebook, I noticed a friend’s company based in Australia held a fishing expedition as a way to reward its sales force. Yes, this is a predominantly male-focused teambuilding experience, but there are ways to encourage everyone of any age or gender to get involved. Conservation authority properties are not only perfect for fishing but also provide hiking trails, picnic areas and lush open spaces to set up obstacle courses or to play a friendly game of touch football. Surrounded by nature, it’s a great way to re-energize and find peace, away from a world where it’s always “go, go go”!

Skyzone Trampoline_April 2013_cropped

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, injured and the people of Boston after last Monday’s Boston Marathon Bombings. It is in shock, sadness and disbelief that this could have happened and why. The Boston Marathon holds history, tradition and goodness, and this act of terror has twisted all the goodness that comes from it. As a Canadian citizen, we stand united with the American people that such an act of terror is not acceptable nor will it be condoned. I dedicate my following Blog Entry to you.

As I was watching a recent news segment (I watch a lot of news!), the reporter featured a cool concept where people of all ages get to jump indoors on a trampoline. Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park is the creator of the world’s first all-trampoline walled playing court. What a great way to get your exercise and a unique place to hold a teambuilding experience and/or event!

It provides the ultimate 3-D Play Experience! There are different court areas geared towards various age groups at select times in a day. Groups can rent the 1-Hour Dodge-ball Court during weekdays and the weekend. Everyone who jumps at Sky Zone must complete a valid waiver for that particular location. Socks are a must as everyone who jumps will need to be fitted for special jumping shoes (shoe rental fee is included in the admission fee). And when you want to take a break between jumping, catering is available for your group to munch on.

Good news, Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park has just announced they’ll be opening locations in Chicago and Elmhurst, Illinois in 2013! Sky Zone is already operating in Mississauga and Toronto, Ontario and another location is expected to open soon in Canada’s Capital, Ottawa.

Ping Pong your team out of this world!

Ping Pong_March Blog

I was recently watching the news where they showed SPiN Toronto, a venue where one can come play … wait for it ……. ping pong!!(also known as table tennis for which I prefer to use my own table tennis paddles) Instantly my ears perked up as I thought to myself what a cool concept, especially for a teambuilding experience. Located in Toronto (Canada), New York, Los Angeles and Milwaukee, SPiN Galactic is ‘a galaxy of Ping-Pong social clubs’. These ‘social clubs’ were created by Franck Raharinosy, Andrew Gordon, Jonathan Bricklin and Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon. Each location holds tournaments and events on different days of the week. How it works is that there are individual and family memberships offered. The SPiN Membership Philosophy is “to create a global community of people, socializing, exercising and fantasizing together, thanks to a 2.7gram, 40mm gas filled, celluloid, ricocheting round ball … with a coefficient restitution of .88.” Quirky, but it works!

However, members and non-members are able to book ahead at a Group Reservation rate for a corporate party. Each location offers private event party room(s) for hosting large groups. This would be a great way for any team looking to boost overall morale or as an incentive reward after a big project. In between games, the team can enjoy some eating and drinking at each of the club’s respective restaurants, bars and lounges. You can be rest assured that Toronto’s restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients and handmade sauces in creating their meals.

I can’t remember the last time I picked up a paddle. I think I’ll have to check out SPiN and have myself a friendly game of ping pong.

In Touch with the Nature of Things

Reptilia

My family and I recently visited Reptilia; an indoor reptile exhibit and educational zoo facility located in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada (known as “the city above Toronto”). As I was investigating the venue, I noticed that they host unique teambuilding experiences for corporate events. Where the groups can actually hold these exotic and very dangerous animals (read my words, SNAKES!!!) under the close supervision of the Reptilia team leaders. If you are looking to get your team to “think outside the box”, I think this unique experience will do it! Ha!

Not only does your team get to touch and feel the animals, they will also learn the history and facts of the species and the worlds they come from. As we walked around all the different glass-encased exhibits, it was amazing (and I’ll admit eerie) to see these life-like sized animals, that are typically seen on Animal Planet and Discovery Channel. Crocodiles, alligators, iguanas, frogs, snakes, so many snakes ….but the kids were in awe more than I!

Your team not only can hold a boa constrictor or tarantula in their hands, they can have their photo taken with them too! This can prove to be a fun yet informational corporate teambuilding outing for any department looking to escape the everyday jungle they call their workplace. I’m sure it will be an experience that they’ll never forget!

For more information on how to book your next corporate teambuilding experience and/or event at Reptilia, please visit their website for more details:

Giving a Winter Play Day Experience

Winter Team Building Activities

Happy New Year! Best wishes for 2013!

Winter has officially arrived. With it, brings memories of playing in the snow, skating and tobogganing. Remember having Play Day outside in the school yard? Moving from activity station to activity station.Breathing a sigh of relief once you reached the hot chocolate station, whether it was indoors or outdoors.

Why not organize an Employee Play Day experience? Weather permitting, you could arrange stations such as snowshoe tag, best snowman costume, igloo fort building, and, snowball dodge ball, to name a few. Team Building incorporating outdoor activities to inspire “out of the box” thinking is actually the top fifth teambuilding trend for 2013.* For example, you could incorporate the reality show, Survivor inspired team building as a winter forest theme.

Snow or not, you can still arrange for your team to get out of the office for some team bonding in the fresh, crisp winter air. Walkathons are typically saved for the spring season but why not arrange to walk for a local charity of choice (note: top third teambuilding trend for 2013; team building that gives back to the community) and walk the business neighborhood you operate in. And you can still have hot cocoa waiting for them upon their arrival.

Keep your team moving despite the cold, frosty air out there so the dark days of winter can be bearable and productive!

Team Work – Giving Back to Your Business Community!

By: Rosita Carobelli-Zukowski

Social Service Agencies like Food Banks, Soup Kitchens and Shelters continually need volunteers throughout the year, not just for special holiday times like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Why not encourage your staff and organize half days where teams go in and volunteer their time to give back to the business community they operate in? This is a great way for employees to engage with one another while helping out those less fortunate within their community.

We’ve all organized food and toy drives…how about a business clothing drive? We all have business clothes (i.e. shirts, ties, blouses, dress pants, etc.) that are gently-used that we have outgrown or don’t fit us properly anymore. I recently purged my closet with my husband and we collected a bag worth of business clothes that no longer fit or suit us. Instead of donating to consignment stores this time, donate them to non-profit organizations (i.e. Goodwill or Salvation Army) that run career centers and employment services and workshops for those looking for jobs. These donated clothing items will provide the clients of these organizations to “dress to impress”. Especially during the first few weeks on the new job as well as when the clients are going for interviews. This will help clients with one less worry of where they’ll find the money to “look the part” that they need to succeed. The clothing will be one less concern for the registrants benefiting from such employment programs.
